Blog Response

This is in response to Tammy Meneses' post about paperwork.  I would say I second the notion of the amount of paper work associated with special education, but it has already been seconded and third, etc.  Seriously, there is a ton of paperwork when dealing with IEPs.  A majority of my IEPs, as I'm sure is the case with everyone, seem to fall in November and April.  I have been told this is because the students are usually tested right after school starts and right after state assessments.  Whether that is the case or just coincidence I have definitely honed my time management skills during the months of November and April.  There is a lot of paper work and in my opinion some of it seems redundant, but it is also necessary to ensure the student is getting his or her needs met as well as if the student is making adequate progress or if a change in the IEP is warranted.  Hopefully, we as special education teachers continue to work together to help make meeting the needs of our students more efficient thus requiring less paperwork.  Maybe.

Final Thoughts

Although I posted my thoughts on the interviews into the discussion board, I thought it would be nice to visit the bloggers and share with both classes as well.

I would just like to say that this class has been a challenge for me. Dr. Scott has given us assignments that require us to take our textbook knowledge and apply it to the “real world”. Although I have struggled to keep up on my assignments and look forward to the break from writing papers, I very much appreciate the challenge he has set before us. It has really allowed me to explore special education in a different way and I will walk away from this class with a greater understanding and appreciation for special education and the laws that support it.  As a parent who has a daughter with a  learning disability, one thing that I wish is that each parent would be blessed with this same understanding and knowledge so that they would know how to advocate for their children.

Thank you Dr. Scott for a great semester and thank you to my fellow classmates who endured with meJ
